Reusable Menstrual Products

Happy International Women's Day to our Customers. Our swap of the week this week is Reusable Menstrual Products and I was lucky enough to spend some time with Rosie from Rosie's Eco Store doing a live Instagram where we discussed their care, and why you might want to transition to using pads, cups or period underwear.

The video is available to watch below but if you want the sound bites version;

  1. The average woman sends 5-15k disposable menstrual products to Landfill in her life time. This is drastically reduced with reusable products.
  2. They can improve your gynecological health. Disposable products contain bleach, pesticides, perfumes etc. as well as sweat trapping plastics. This can cause thrush, UTI's, and irritation. Reusable products breathe, don't contain additional chemicals, and are soft.
  3. Caring for them is easy, with pads and pants we recommend a cold rinse before chucking them in the normal wash (our laundry detergents and powders can wash as low as 30c which also helps reduce your impact). For Cups you sterilize them by boiling for 5-10 minutes between your cycles.
  4. Period Positivity is important. Menstrual health is not icky, or dirty. Using a reusable product can give you a better understanding of your cycle, and is a way to gauge your general health. If you got a nose bleed would you throw your shirt away or wash it?
  5. Buy these products over time to transition gradually and spread out the cost. We know they can seem expensive but when the _average_ woman in Ireland spends €121 a year on disposable period products you can easily see how savings can add up when you aren't buying new pads every month.

We hope our chat can help you make the swap and move towards a more sustainable future. Be sure to check out our reusable product range online and in store.
